Amanda Marshall - Heavy Lifting European Showcase
"It takes years to learn how to develop your own style. When I first stepped into a recording studio, I was six years old. I felt at home right away. I grew up in Toronto, a diverse, multicultural city, in a family that was itself very diverse, and so I came into contact with all kinds of music, regardless of genre" Amanda Marshall In the summer of 1990, at just sixteen, Amanda Marshall met the Canadian guitar legend Jeff Healey. Enthused by her talent, Healey invited the then-unknown singer to join him on his tour through Canada. "He not only introduced me to a whole range of new musical influences that I was immediately excited about - Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Chris Whitley and many others," Marshall says. Inspired by the guitarist, she decided to make music professionally. In 1991, Columbia Records offered her a record deal, which Marshall turned down. It was only in 1994 that she accepted Sony Records' offer. Her parents still had to co-sign the contract, as Amanda was not yet old enough. At the end of 1995, her self-titled album was released, producing two international top-ten hits, 'Let It Rain' and 'Birmingham'. Within a year, she received a diamond record for the album, which sold over one million copies in her home country of Canada. In total, the album received gold or platinum awards in 15 countries. Here in Germany, 'Amanda Marshall' stayed in the charts for a full 22 weeks. In 1996, she received an invitation from Peter Maffay to accompany him on his Germany tour. The next two albums, Tuesday's Child (1999) and Everbody's Got A Story (2001), both multi-platinum, were no less successful. At the end of the last millennium, Amanda Marshall's second album spent 18 weeks in the German album charts. "Music has taken me all around the world. I have met many of the people I recorded and performed with, whose works sat on the shelves in my parents' living room during my formative years," she says. "It was a humbling and exciting experience; I asked them every question and tried to learn as much as possible from every collaboration." After 2002, things grew quiet around the Canadian singer. The reason was a legal dispute with her then label, which led to all her activities being restricted for the time being. In the same year, Marshall also parted ways with her then management. By 2008, several 'Best Of' albums had been released, and only in June 2023, after almost a quarter of a century, did Amanda Marshall release new music with her album 'Heavy Lifting'.
